Tens of thousands of runners, has Kenya Dorminates the Madrid Marathon on Sunday (Apr. 28).

The streets of Madrid came alive on Sunday, April 28, as tens of thousands of runners gathered to take on the grueling 42-kilometer challenge of the Madrid Marathon. The competition was fierce, with athletes from Kenya and Ethiopia leading the charge in both the men's and women's races.

In the men's race, it was Ethiopia's Mitku Tafa who set the pace early on, pulling ahead shortly after the starting gun. Tafa maintained a steady lead for much of the race, demonstrating a remarkable blend of speed and endurance. However, with just 7 kilometers to go, the intense Spanish heat and a hamstring strain in his left thigh nearly derailed his victory hopes.

Despite the pain, Tafa dug deep and powered through to claim the second marathon win of his career, crossing the finish line with a time of 2 hours, 8 minutes, and 58 seconds.
Hot on his heels was fellow Ethiopian Fikre Bekele, who claimed the runner-up spot, while Kenya's Douglas Chebii finished a strong third. It was a thrilling showdown, with spectators lining the streets, cheering on these remarkable athletes.
In the women's race, Naom Jebet from Kenya delivered a stunning performance to secure her first international marathon win. The 2023 Nairobi City Marathon champion took control early on and never looked back, finishing with a commanding time of 2 hours, 26 minutes, and 20 seconds.

Her closest competitor, Ethiopia's Bontu Bekele, finished 44 seconds behind, while Kebene Chala, also from Ethiopia, took third place.
The Madrid Marathon proved to be a showcase of incredible talent, endurance, and determination. It was a day of remarkable achievements, with athletes pushing their limits and inspiring the crowds with their perseverance and athletic prowess.
