In a devastating turn of events, over 4,000 residents have been forced to flee their homes in Ghana as the Akosombo Dam overflowed, causing widespread destruction along the banks of the River Volta.
This catastrophe has not only displaced thousands but has also disrupted crucial services, leaving entire areas without access to water and electricity. The Ghanaian government officially confirmed the displacement of people in at least nine districts due to the flooding.
The United Nations-affiliated Global Disaster and Coordination System reported seven injuries linked to this disaster.
Prior to the flooding, the Volta River Authority had issued advisories urging residents to relocate to higher ground. This recommendation was prompted by rising water levels upstream of the Akosombo Dam, mainly driven by heavy rainfall in the region.
