President Yoweri Museveni stirred controversy by appointing his son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, as the top military commander, sparking concerns about dynastic succession in Uganda.

Despite laws prohibiting serving army officers from engaging in politics, Kainerugaba has been actively involved in rallies and recently launched the Patriotic League of Uganda, claiming nonpartisanship and a focus on promoting patriotism.

The appointment of Kainerugaba to his new role, along with the elevation of two of his closest advisors to ministerial positions in a government reshuffle, has led to speculation that Museveni is backing his son's political ambitions.

With no clear indication of when Museveni plans to retire after decades in power, and with no significant rivals within his party, the military's influence in selecting his successor is increasingly apparent, especially considering Kainerugaba's strategic placement within the security services.
