The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has rescheduled its planned offshore pipeline maintenance, known as "pigging," to February 3, 2025.
This decision follows concerns from the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) about potential power supply challenges due to insufficient fuel for thermal plants.
The maintenance, initially set for January 20, 2025, involves cleaning and inspecting the offshore pipeline from Badagry, Nigeria, to Takoradi, Ghana. The first phase, covering the onshore section in Nigeria, was completed in December 2024.
During the maintenance, there will be a temporary suspension of reverse gas flow from Ghana's Western Region to Tema, and shutdowns of key facilities in Tema, Lomé, and Cotonou. This is to replace subsea valves and enhance operational safety.
WAPCo's decision to postpone allows the Ghanaian government time to secure alternative fuel sources, such as light crude oil, to maintain power generation during the maintenance period.
The company emphasizes that these inspections, conducted every five years, are essential for the safe and efficient operation of the West African Gas Pipeline, ensuring reliable energy delivery across the region.
