The ministry firmly declared that mediation is off the table until Ethiopia rectifies its contested agreement with Somaliland, emphasizing the need for the withdrawal of the perceived illegal deal and a clear affirmation of Somalia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The controversial accord, inked by Ethiopia and Somaliland on January 1, has ignited fury within Somalia, as it views the region as an integral part of its territory. Somalia vehemently denounces the deal, branding it a violation of its sovereignty. In response, the African Union's Peace and Security Council issued a call for restraint on Wednesday, emphasizing the paramount importance of respecting Somalia's sovereignty.
Amidst escalating tensions, the Council expressed deep concern about the potential wider regional impact and urged all parties to exercise caution. Meanwhile, members of the East African regional bloc IGAD are convening in Uganda on Thursday to address and deliberate on this simmering dispute.
