A tragic incident occurred on Friday morning in Jos city, Plateau state, North-Central Nigeria, where a two-storey school building collapsed, resulting in the deaths of 22 students. The collapse of Saints Academy College happened shortly after students, mostly aged 15 or younger, had arrived for their morning classes.
Out of the 154 students trapped in the rubble, 132 were rescued and are currently receiving treatment for their injuries, according to Plateau police spokesman Alfred Alabo. Rescue and health workers, along with security forces, were quickly dispatched to the scene to assist in the efforts.
The state government attributed the collapse to the school's weak structure and its proximity to a riverbank, urging other schools with similar vulnerabilities to shut down immediately. Unfortunately, building collapses are becoming more frequent in Nigeria, largely due to inadequate enforcement of building regulations and poor maintenance practices.
