As one of Africa's leading oil producers, Nigeria, with its 215 million population, has long grappled with fuel shortages, relying heavily on fuel imports due to the inefficiency of its state-owned refineries. Launched in 2013 with an initial budget of $18.5 billion (now doubled), this colossal $18.5 billion-plus industrial endeavor is touted as the "largest single-train refinery in the world" by the Dangote Group. Once fully operational, it is poised to boast the highest crude refining capacity on the African continent.
Initially set to process 350,000 barrels per day, the refinery's capacity is expected to reach 650,000 barrels when operating at full tilt, producing a spectrum of refined products, including diesel, jet fuel, automotive fuel, and liquefied petroleum gas. Anticipating an additional 5 million barrels in the coming weeks, the facility's strategic location adjacent to the new Lekki deep-water port aims to alleviate congestion at the Port of Lagos and facilitate the export of Dangote's refined oil to other African nations.
Aliko Dangote envisions that "at least 40% of the refinery's capacity will be available for export," foreseeing substantial foreign exchange earnings for the country.
