Lagos State takes a bold step towards environmental sustainability by swiftly implementing a ban on styrofoam and single-use plastics. Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab declared the decision on January 21, citing the detrimental impact these non-biodegradable materials have on the environment.
Highlighting the daily obstruction of drainage channels due to styrofoam, the Commissioner instructed the immediate enforcement of the ban by the State Waste Management Authority and Kick Against Indiscipline. Producers and distributors were warned of heavy fines and penalties, emphasizing that they might bear the costs of daily cleanup activities.
Commissioner Wahab firmly stated that the economic interests of a few should not hold the state hostage, emphasizing the need to prioritize the well-being of millions of Lagosians affected by the indiscriminate disposal of single-use plastics.
Encouraging a shift in consumer behavior, he urged residents to boycott styrofoam and single-use plastics, advocating for the adoption of reusable food containers and water bottles. The message is clear: Lagos State is committed to combating environmental hazards, and everyone must play their part.
