Mmapaseka "Steve" Letsike, a prominent South African human rights activist and Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities, has consistently emphasized the importance of inclusivity and equality for the LGBTI+ community. In a recent interview with Newzroom Afrika's Ziyanda Ngcobo, Letsike stated, "LGBTI+ people are an integral part of society and we cannot run away from that," reaffirming South Africa's commitment to respecting all individuals.
Throughout her career, Letsike has been a steadfast advocate for marginalized communities. She co-founded Access Chapter 2, a non-governmental organization dedicated to addressing intersectional issues affecting South Africa's marginalized populations, including black people, women, children, and the LGBTI+ community. Her leadership roles have extended to serving as the Co-Chair of the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) and the National Task Team established by the Department of Justice to address hate crimes and gender-based violence.
In January 2023, Letsike was co-opted into the African National Congress's National Executive Committee (NEC), marking a historic inclusion of a vocal LGBTI+ activist in the party's highest decision-making body. Her appointment was seen as a significant step toward ensuring that the voices of minority and previously marginalized members are represented within the ANC.
Letsike's unwavering dedication to human rights and equality continues to play a crucial role in shaping policies and fostering an inclusive society in South Africa.
