In a recent interview with Newzroom Afrika's Phila Mdletshe, Mbongeni Phewa, Public Relations Officer for the Inanda Community Policing Forum (CPF), emphasized the critical need for the community to actively collaborate with law enforcement to combat the escalating crime rates in Inanda, north of Durban. He highlighted that residents are often aware of individuals involved in illicit activities, such as drug dealing, and stressed the importance of working closely with the police to address these issues effectively.

Phewa's remarks come in the context of a planned imbizo—a community engagement meeting—aimed at raising crime awareness and developing strategies to tackle violence in the area. Inanda has been identified as a hotspot for serious crimes, including murder and rape. Recent statistics revealed that the Inanda police station recorded 99 murder cases between July and September, the highest in the country for that period.

The CPF has expressed concerns about the potential for escalating violence, particularly following incidents where community members have resorted to mob justice. Phewa noted that some residents have taken the law into their own hands, targeting individuals suspected of criminal activities. He urged all relevant stakeholders, including government entities, to collaborate in finding solutions to the crime problem.

In response to the rising crime rates, local authorities have announced plans to hold an imbizo to address the issue. KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring community safety, stating, "Crime will not define our communities. We will stand together, and we will protect our people."

Phewa's call to action underscores the importance of community involvement in crime prevention. By fostering a cooperative relationship between residents and law enforcement agencies, Inanda aims to create a safer environment for all its inhabitants.
