France has agreed to help finance a massive power project that will link Casablanca, Morocco's largest city, to Dakhla in Western Sahara. This major development involves a 3-gigawatt power cable stretching across a vast distance and signifies France's renewed interest in Moroccan energy infrastructure.
French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire announced this support during a business forum in Rabat. This news follows France's recent backing of Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara, indicating a thaw in the diplomatic chill between the two nations. The Western Sahara region has long been a point of contention, with Morocco claiming it as its southern provinces, while the Algeria-backed Polisario Front seeks its independence.
France's support is seen as a positive step, with other nations such as the United States and several Arab and African countries already acknowledging Morocco's authority in the region. As the project gains momentum, it may further solidify Morocco's position and strengthen diplomatic ties with its allies.
