About the Program:
The Climate Finance Accelerator (CFA) is a global technical assistance program funded by the UK government. Its primary mission is to support climate-smart projects in accessing finance. In South Africa, the CFA brings together key players in the climate finance investment chain, including project proponents, finance providers, and policymakers. The goal is to collaborate effectively, unlock finance for climate projects, and create a pipeline of 'investment-ready' low-carbon projects.
Objectives:
The CFA program seeks to achieve several goals, including:
- Encouraging the flow of finance required to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
- Promoting inclusive approaches to sustainable development.
- Improving social transformation.
- Building resilience to climate impacts.
Eligibility Criteria for Candidate Projects:
Projects applying to the CFA program in South Africa should meet the following criteria:
- Designed to achieve measurable climate outcomes, including greenhouse gas emission reductions.
- Have a minimum total financing need of at least US$4 million.
- Be at the technical pre-feasibility stage of development.
- Possess a business model that can generate commercially attractive and sustainable returns in the long term, with potential initial concessional financing.
Support Offered by CFA:
The CFA provides a range of capacity-building support to assist climate mitigation projects in accessing finance, including:
- Access to investors to understand their needs and enhance financing opportunities.
- Coaching, capacity building, and best practice insights to make projects more attractive and investment-ready.
- Networking opportunities with investors and key stakeholders in the climate finance landscape.
- Increased project visibility through participation in CFA events.
- Assistance in achieving Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) project objectives that align with investors' goals.
